  • Visual Studio 2005 Launch Event - Dallas

I just got back from checking in at the Dallas convention center in preperation for tomorrow's Microsoft Launch Tour 2005.  The convention center looks great and registered attendance is at 3,850!  This should be an awesome event loaded with great speakers and all attendees will walk away with a FREE copy of Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Server 2005 Standard Editions!  I'll be manning the "Ask the Experts" from 1:45 - 5:45 - please stop in and introduce yourself if you are attending the event.

p.s. I forgot to add in my initial post that I'll be manning the ATE booth with Dock

  • VistaDB 2.1 database for .NET has been released - Get your FREE Copy

VistaDB 2.1 database for .NET has been released

This 2.1 update includes over 60 improvements, including new support for .NET 2.0 and Visual Studio 2005. VistaDB is a small-footprint, embedded SQL database alternative to Jet/Access, MSDE and SQL Server Express 2005 that enables developers to build .NET 1.1 and .NET 2.0 applications. Features SQL-92 support, small 500KB embedded footprint, free 2-User VistaDB Server for remote TCP/IP data access, royalty free distribution for both embedded and server, Copy 'n Go! deployment, managed ADO.NET Provider, data management and data migration tools. Free trial is available for download.
    - Learn more about VistaDB
    - Repost this to your blog and receive a FREE copy of VistaDB 2.1!

My own personal notes: VistaDB has supported the FWDNUG in the past - sending us a couple of free copies to hand out as prizes.  Additionally - I've been interested in their product because of it's small footprint, performance, and ease of deployment.  Unfortunately, I haven't had the opportunity to utilize VistaDB in any projects yet.  If I ever build a distributable winforms app that I need to deploy to a lot of desktops - you can bet I'll be taking advantage of VistaDB and it's XCOPY deployment.  Especially with SQL Server Express 2005 not entirely living up to my deployment expectations.

  • Phoenix .NET UG Trip - End of October

I recently travelled to Phoenix to attend a family wedding.  Scott Cate is one of my good friends in the Industry and I pinged him way back about the possibility of combining my family trip to Phoenix with a User Group presentation (Scott helps run the Arizona .NET UG).  The schedules matched up so I presented “Leveraging Data in ASP.NET” to the AZDNUG on Tuesday October 25 @6pm.  Actually, when I first signed up to speak at the AZDNUG I didn't realize that their meetings consisted of 2 seperate presentations, with a pizza break in between.  I figured I could strech out my "Leveraging Data" talk, but hastily decided the night before to also do my "Personalization and Membership in ASP.NET 2.0" presentation as well.  So, I spent the day of the meeting in my hotel room banging out the demo's for that talk.  I ended up rushing through my last presentation, and my last two demo's didn't work (I fore warned them that some of my P&M demo's would probably break).  All things considered, I'm happy with my first speaking efforts outside of the DFW metroplex.  Special thanks to the to the UG members for their patience as I quickly switched back and forth to espn.com throughout the talks to check out the score in the World Series of my beloved White Sox against the Astros.  I never imagined when we booked the trip to Phoenix that the White Sox would be playing in the World Series at the same time!

  • Test Driven Development w/FWDNUG

The November meeting of the FWNDUG will be held on Tuesday Nov 8th @6pm.  One of our regular FWDNUG members, Tim Rayburn, will be presenting on Test Driven Development.  We look forward to having one of our own members present to the group!
  • October FWDNUG

I’d like to thank Steve Smith for making the trip down to Ft. Worth for the October meeting of the FWDNUG.  Steve gave a great presentation on the benefits and Best Practices to follow for Caching in ASP.NET.  You can download Steve’s PowerPoint Deck and Demo’s here.  A special thanks to INETA for sending Steve down to Texas from Ohio as part of the INETA Speakers Bureau Program.

  • Geek Gathering + Free Beer + Family Out of Town = Dad's Night Out!

Geeks and Beer - I admit it's not always the best combination!  But, if you live in the DFW area - try and make it to the next Geek Gathering at Gameworks in Grapevine starting at 7pm.  Free Beer you read?  Well, not unlimited free drinks, but Cory has graciously offered to buy your first drink only if you RSVP at his blog.  My wife and kids will be out of town so I'm not missing this opportunity to "geek it out" for the night!

I've only been to one of the first 3 Geek Gatherings, but here is what I can tell you so far:

    1. I kick Ass at Air Hockey!  Well, the sample size was kinda small - only like 4 other competitors, but I am pretty good.  The only game I "lost" was to Cory, I was down by 1 goal to him, but our Air Hockey skills are so superb that we managed to lose one of the pucks when it flew off the game.  All of us spent several minutes looking for that damn puck to no avail.  I am a competitor, ok, I HATE to lose, but I had to finally concede the game to Cory when we gave up the search for the missing puck.  Besides, the best I could do was tie the game, so I'll be a good sport about it this time :p  My apologies to those of you who got smashed fingers and stopped flying pucks with their bodies!
    2. I Kick Ass at the full-sized, VR, networked F1 Driving Game!  We only played this one time as a group.  I was in the lead at the beginning and then an unfortunate crash put me back in the pack.  The best part was literally overtaking Cory at the finish line with only a second to go - he never knew what hit him!
    3. Don't be dumb like me!  When you load up your Gameworks playing card - don't purchase a pre-defined $ amount.  As it usually goes, it wasn't until immediately after I purchased $15 on my card did I notice you could purchase an hour or two hours of unlimited game playing - Doh!
    4. Video Games can make you sick!  Cory and I closed down Gameworks playing this futuristic driving game.  Basically, you lay down on your back and the screen is above you.  You drive your vehicle at ridiculous speeds in a 3D Tunnel (reminds me of the way old game, Tempest) while attempting to drive over speed boosts and avoiding obstacles on the course.  The way the game relays the feeling of speed is to have the tunnel move towards you super fast while your vehicle basically remains stationary, except for it's ability to drive on any plane of the tunnel (upside down, rightside up, etc...)To add to the effect, the entire seat shakes and vibrates.  Well, after 2 games of this I felt like barfing - that same feeling you get after stuffing yourself with buttery popcorn and soda at the movie theater.  It wasn't until I was half-way home, with all my windows down, that I was feeling better.  Regardless, I can't wait to play that game again!
    5. The car I drove home is NOT a video game car!  I've had this same effect happen to me after playing a round of golf.  I drive around for 4 hours in the golf cart and when I get in my real car to drive home I drive it like I'm in a race.  Well, multiply that 10 fold after playing VR F1 racing games and that futuristic racing game!!  Owning a sports car, liking to drive fast, and playing video games makes me thing I'm Mario Andretti.  It didn't help that it was dark and the roads were deserted!

To sum it up, you'll want to attend the geek gathering to: make me look like a fool with my Air Hockey and F1 VR claims, free beer, and geeky camaraderie ship!

  • RIP "runat=server"

"runat=server" was my short-lived attempt at maintaining a seperate technical blog from my personal blog.  I only had 2 entries in at up to this point, so I just copied them over to "Texas Yankee" (my now "one-size-fits all blog") and deleted the technical blog.  I had debated with myself on this decision to maintain 2 seperate blogs anyways, but I think things will be much easier for me to have everything in one place.  Eventually, I will create unique pages to seperate my technical and personal posts so that my family won't be bored to death by me technical posts and my geek friends won't be turned off by my family posts.

Special thanks to GAD for harrasing me about my lack of blog posts - I think.
